Introduction

Cadwyn Clwyd has secured funding to establish a network of ibeacon trails across Flintshire, Denbighshire and Wrexham during 2017. Heritage interpretation consultants Jo Danson, Lorna Jenner and Bill Smuts have been appointed to work with eighteen communities to develop the trails in partnership with Locly, the software company.

What are ibeacons?

ibeacons are small electronic devices that allow you to tell site-specific stories on location to people via their smart phone or tablet without the need for wifi.

How do ibeacons fit in with existing interpretation?

ibeacons offer an exciting, modern way of engaging people and enhancing their experience by delivering relevant, multimedia content that can work well alongside traditional media such as panels and leaflets.

As with all interpretation the message is more important than the medium and careful planning and creative storytelling are essential.

Users download the app either at home or in a wifi hotspot and then are able to access content that might include images, audio or video as they explore the trail.
